School presentations – craft, drama, games and more!

During Term 2, Ally was busy getting out and about visiting schools who will be presenting at the Melbourne Water Kids Teaching Kids Conference. With 38 presenting schools, there is a great range of topics and activities being planned.

Here’s a quick snapshot to get you excited!

Carrum Primary School – Workshop

The students are learning all about the Karrum Karrum Swamplands which used to be where their school now lives. The workshop will take the format of story telling and drama and their audience will have the chance to be part of a radio broadcast to tell the story of how this area changed from swampland to the suburbia that it is today.

Beaconsfield Upper Primary School – Video

These guys will be refining their claymation skills to bring us a video titled “Yesterday, Today, Ribbit”. A tale about a frog who travels in a time machine in search of a solution to clean up his home. He meets the Rainbow Serpent and together they create a cleaner world

Bentleigh West Primary School – EPD Activity

Drama, art and map skills will be combined in this EPD activity. Students will explore the story of Bunjil the Eagle and the Indigenous history of the Yarra River,  and will think about how waterways near their school interact with the Yarra.

Mount Waverley Primary School – Workshop

Jeannie Baker’s book “Window” and the students’ study of Japan and its culture have provided the inspiration behind this workshop. They’ll be incorporating origami, badge making and visioning what the Yarra River will look like in their art-filled workshop.

Meet the sustainability experts

We are pleased to announce that schools attending MWKTK will have the opportunity to participate in Sustainability Tours at University of Melbourne in the afternoon break on Monday 24 October. Places are limited and schools must sign up to the tours prior to the day (more information will be sent out to schools attending the conference). Some of the highlights that you might see include:

  • 6 Star Green Star Design building – Melbourne School of Design
  • A green oasis in the middle of the campus – System Garden
  • How their food digester helps to deal with organic waste on a large scale

There will also be a sneak peak of Melbourne Quarter with Lendlease. The Melbourne Quarter is a new development on Collins St and is being designed as a 6 and 5 Star Green Star buildings. A limited number of schools have the opportunity to check out the display suites to see what will make this development green.

Volunteers wanted

Every year we have an amazing army of volunteers who help out at MWKTK. Volunteering can be a great way for tertiary students to gain experience and make connections with environmental organisations.
