Kids Teaching Kids is an education model that uses local environmental issues as a theme for learning. Kids Teaching Kids starts in the classroom and extends into the community through the Kids Teaching Kids Learning Model and Program. We know kids are prepared to take up the challenges of saving our environment when we give them responsibility to manage their own learning through the Kids Teaching Kids Learning Model.

The Melbourne Water International Kids Teaching Kids Conference has SOLD OUT for all Melbourne, Victorian, South Australian, Queensland and Western Australian schools.

We will be notifying all successful schools who have expressed interest to date of their registration status today, Thursday 16th February.

All schools interested that register from today 16th of February will be placed on a waiting list and will be notified of any free places when they become available.

Note: We have limited places remaining for NSW, Tasmania and NT schools, so if you are from these regions please log on and register as normal - but be quick!

20,000 Kids Take Over as Teachers for Australia Post Kids Teaching Kids Week 29 August to 2 September 2011

Classrooms were transformed last week when up to 20,000 kids across Australia reverse roles with their teacher and educate each other about the environment. At more than 400 schools across Australia, kids hosted their own events as part of Australia Post Kids Teaching Kids Week. QLD Australia Post Kids Teaching Kids Conference 11-12 August 2011 was a huge success

Congratulations to everyone involved in the 2011 Australia Post Queensland Kids Teaching Kids Conference –  It was great to be back at the Event Centre on the Sunshine Coast, working with great QLD schools and organizations.

The School presentations gave everyone great ideas about how we can all ensure our natural environment, resources and habitats remain healthy and productive. We had a fantastic two days together!! Seeing what Queensland’s young people are doing to make their cities and towns and schools sustainable into the future, and what can be done now to make sure we get there was nothing short of inspirational.

Almost 300 students and teachers from 23 schools across Queensland took part in the conference with most from the Sunshine Coast – and we thank our partner Sunshine Coast Council for supporting most of you to be here.

Melbourne Water Kids Teaching Kids Conference 23 - 24 June 2011 was so much fun!

2011 Melbourne Water Kids Teaching Kids Final Report

447 students and teachers from 50 schools across Melbourne attended the 2011 Melbourne Water Kids Teaching Kids Conference. The Conference sold out in the first week of registrations in February 2011. Twenty schools spent the first two terms of the school year working on their local waterways superheroes presentation theme of interest. Topics on which students presented included waterway health, reducing plastic waste, water recycling, wetland habitat, urban growth and the effects on wildlife, the Albedo effect and how clean energy can be harnessed from water.

Day one of the Conference, Thursday 23rd June, held at Etihad Stadium was officially opened by the Premier Mr Ted Baillieu. The opening session also included a welcome to country and dances, a superhero cape activity, and an Expert Panel Discussion Session. Experts from Melbourne Water, Zoos Victoria, Melbourne University, ABC Online and the Australian Youth Climate Coalition took part in the session. The second day of the conference, delegates participated in a range of hands-on learning activities at the Melbourne Zoo. Melbourne Zoo hosted and coordinated the day’s activities in collaboration with Firestarter. The Conference ended with a representative from each school sharing their local waterways superhero pledge, highlighting some of the key learning that took place at the Conference as well as sharing some long-term projects that would take place as a result of the event. Melbourne Water will be following these pledges after the conference through their education page.

Early Kids Teaching Kids Week Event

On May 27th, Forbes Public School and the Lachlan Catchment Authority co-hosted an outstanding Kids Teaching Kids event: Feathers, Fur and Fins- Creatures of the Lachlan! I would like to congratulate all involved on a very successful day. The student workshops were fantastic and the community atmosphere wonderful.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo, Endangered Challenge, 29th August

Explore challenges faced by species at a local and global level. Team up with Zoo staff to develop and lead a workshop on topics ranging from water quality testing to building a frog pond or investigating the effects of climate change on different species.

MelbourneZoo, Every Day during KTK Week 29th Aug- 2nd Sept

Work with the Melbourne Zoo team to develop interactive workshops, and present them to Zoo visitors during Kids Teaching Kids Week.

Melbourne Zoo is looking for creative ways to engage visitors and communicate their conservation campaigns, including: Wipe for Wildlife, Beads for Wildlife, Don’t Palm us Off, Seal the Loop and They’re Calling On You

Kids Teaching Kids wins the 2010 People's Choice Banksia Award

Selected from 55 high profile finalists across all categories Kids Teaching Kids has taken out the coveted People's Choice Banksia Award at a gala awards presentation at Sydney Town Hall. The Banksia Awards function was attended by 100's of leading environmental and business representatives, including Minister for Environment Tony Burke. This award is fantastic recognition for students, teachers, volunteers and sponsors of Kids Teaching Kids. In particular Kids Teaching Kids would like to thank Australia Post for their fantastic and ongoing support. A snapshot of what’s happening around country for 2010 Australia Post Kids Teaching Kids Week

Teachers around the country will take a back seat this week as students teach each other about the environment as part of the inaugural Australia Post Kids Teaching Kids Week.

Over 12,500 students in hundreds of schools across Australia will be focussed on making a difference to seemingly insurmountable environmental issues, including climate change, water, waste, conservation, energy, drought, habitat destruction, population and pollution to bring about positive environmental change.

Some examples of the many events being held during Kids Teaching Kids Week:
 
NSW: in Sydney, over 220 students will be at Taronga Park Zoo doing presentations on the theme of “Climate Change and Endangered Species” with hands-on environment activities amongst the animal enclosures.
QLD: in Gympie, more than 650 students will converge on Gympie Showgrounds with costumed presentations on litter, waste recycling and solar energy and hands on workshops, environmental displays as well as a massive digital wall where students will post comments about the future of the globe.
 
VIC: in Williamstown, 180 children from nine schools in the Hobsons Bay area will take part in fun workshops and costumed performances including a rhythmic drama on being water wise, an original song about saving water and the creation of a collaborative schools banner.
 
WA: in Baldivis, Perth more than 120 students will converge on Baldivis Children’s Forest with costumed and dance presentations on forest conservation, recycling and animal welfare. Students will also perform with musical instruments made of recycled material and create a wooden screen mural for use in the forest compound.

TAS: in Molesworth, Hobart an animal safety quiz will be conducted by six students, dressed as Tassie Devils to educate their classmates about how they can help keep animals safe in the bush. Some of the questions will cover issues like feral cats, bush fire prevention and how to keep the bush free from litter.
 
SA: at Fulham, around 40 students and teachers from seven schools from the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges area will be involved in fun workshops and activities to explain the environment projects they work on in their schools.
ACT: at Calwell Primary School, students are developing a podcast on sustainable housing including efficient heating/cooling systems and how we can change our behaviours at home and school to reduce our impacts on the environment. 

NT: at Ross Primary School 11 eco-warriors in year 5/6 will talk with the other school kids about what they’ve learned as eco-warriors covering things like sustainability, better use of water and energy, and how to do recycling and composting, and then take the messages on to the Alice Springs Spring Fair on the weekend with pamphlets they’re making.

We have an aim of involving 1000 schools across Australia in presenting a workshop during Australia Post Kids Teaching Kids Week from August 30th to September 3rd.
